The Wonder of TilburyMy second year project celebrates the history of Tilbury, in particular the chimneys at Tilbury Power Station. This project involves rebuilding the south chimney and transforming it into a wonder. A bamboo scaffolding pyramid surrounds the chimney, providing support during construction and holding viewing spaces within. At the top of the pyramid sits the sun viewing platform, angled and designed for optimal sunrise and sunset viewing, along with a breakfast room and sun deck.
I commenced the project through generating models using bamboo skewers and balsa wood. First, I was looking at details of existing Wonders of The World and recreating these while considering construction techniques (photographs of Japanese joint details set out below) which I carried through to the final design. My reason for using bamboo was that it contrasts the typical material used for the Wonders and therefore I wished to experiment with something that allowed for a different level of detail. The following drawings and renders are all generated through Sketchup and illustrate the complexity of both the design and construction of my project. |
